How can I stop our Golden Retriever from chasing his tail and pulling hair out and eating it?

By: admin
Published: May 24th, 2010

We have a 1yr old Golden Retriever. He has developed a bad habit of chasing his tail. Once he catches it he pulls out a mouthful of hair and eats it. He seems to be doing it purely for enjoyment and playing. I have looked at his tail closely and can not see any skin disorders. He only does this in 10 minute spirts about once a day when he is full of energy. Looking for a way to stop it. He has quite long hair on his tail. Should I trim it off?

You can trim the hair if it bothers you. My dog used to do that, but he outgrew the habit. If it's because of the excess energy, get him to play something else. Just distract him.

My Golden Retriever is pregnaunt. How many puppies are usally in a litter for Golden Retrievers?

There really isn't a deffinant answer but my golden retriever had nine puppies last month. My cousin also has one and hers was pregnant about a year ago and it had eleven puppies. It normally varies based on the dogs weight and general size.

k so my parents said i cud get a Golden Retriever. iv read dat they need to be with a person a lot. i go to school and come back at 2:30, my parents come back at 6, and my bro comes back at 3:30. im wonderin if it is OK to leave it alone between the hours of 9:00AM-2:30PM

Yes, it would be fine to leave it that long. You just need to work on training when you first get it. Are you getting a puppy or an adult dog?

Goldens are usually very loving dogs, that's why you've heard they need to be with a person a lot. They don't need it, they just like it! They just love to be around people!!

Breeding Golden Retrievers and girl doggies?

By: admin
Published: May 12th, 2010

My mom and I would like to start breeding Golden Retrievers. We have a 4 month old (male) Golden Retriever already and he is a great dog. We have never had a female dog and would like to breed the dog we have now with it. What are some things that you can tell me about female dogs or some site that I could become educated on breeding dogs? My mom has already bred my Golden Retriever that I had when I was little with a friend's dog but he was also a male and she didn't really know what happens with the female dog. What I would like to know is that they go into heat 2 times a year? (I think that is what I heard) Also, what other things do they do that males dont? How long are they pregnant? I have many questions so if someone has a site that tells alot about it then that would be greatly appreciated. Also, at what age would it be responsible and safe for you to breed them (at what age of the dogs (both)). Thanks in advance.
My golden right now is a pure golden and is AKC registered.

So you would like to be a Golden breeder! I bred these beautiful dogs for 27 years and owned Golden's for 33 years to tell you everything I did and what I know would take 3 volumes and years. so I'll give the short version.Your male right now is very young and need much time and care and training to even know if he is a Golden worthy to be bred. Having a Golden is a great thing and they are the very best dogs as far as I'm concerned. You should at a year old already have you boy enrolled into a program that will give him his good canine citizen certification. This can be accomplished through your trainer. Then he should be taken and shown in some sort of dog shows so he can be looked at by other Golden breeders and judges to see if he measures up to other Goldens of his age. This should take you well into him being almost 2 years old. At 2 years old the should begin to have all his testing done. All the testing done for Golden's are as follows. Hip x-rays and certification from OFA, elbow certification, thyroid testes, heart certifications, eye certifications. All these test will have to be done and given a good rating before you even consider breeding and being a good and responsible breeder. Oh did I mention that you should be reading all about the Golden's history and their conformation. Yes reading is also a great way to learn.
Let's say he pass's all the tests with great ratings. Now your say you want to get a female. OK lets look at her now. Getting a femal Golden is even more inportant as a male. She must be of equal good blood lines as your male. The same body type and bone structure also. Have her parents been tested for all the things I mentioned above? They should have been and give a clean bill of health. Lets say she was. Now how do your pick a pup. Well you have to look at her temperment and see if it matches your males and if she is very friendly and not to hyper. Ok thenlets say you found her and now you bring her home. She will have to go through the same kind of training as your male and get her good canine citizensghip certificationtoo. BY this time she may be coming into her first heat. Golden girls usually come into their first heat at 9 to 11 months old. You can't breed her just yet because she's too young. So you will have to keep her away from your male for 3 weeks. I mean totally away. Your male will wine and moan and perhaps even stop eating because you girl will be in heat. Ok her heat is over now and things are back to normal. So she needs to go to her first show and be seen and looked at by other in the Golden world too. How does she measure up to other dam in her age group? By the time she is 2 years old she ready for all the tests you will need for her too. They are the same as for your Golden guy with a few extras thrown in too. Your will need to have her tested for any kind of possible STD's that females can carry and or get. Oh yes they do get them. Ok lets say she has passed all her tests mentioned above too. So now you have 2 golden's who are fit and ready to be bred. Your male is almost 3 1/2 by now and your girl is 24 to 26 months. First thing is to get them both back to your vets and have a complete check up to make sure they are fit to be bred. Then an only then can you consider breeding them.
So you see there are a lot of steps to becoming a good and responsible Godlen breeder and having quality Golden's to be bred. It take's time and money and a complete devotion to this breed.
Their are also dissapointment too. A breeding doesn't happen. She doesn't like your male and won't allow him to mate with her. So many other things too.
With Golden's and any other bred the key is knowledge. So I hope I've helped you understand a bit of what a good breeder of these beautiful dogs so go though. I've left out many thing but then I've only got a limited amount of space here.
If you are will to do all the things I've mentioned and more than please, proceed with great care and go with a great deal of knowledge under your belt before you breed.
Good luck!
Oh yes being AKC registered is a good thing but it does not automatically guanantee quality.

Thanks DP for bring this question to my attention :)

I was wondering if I can breed my pedigree Golden retriever with a Pure bred Chocolate labrador?

What would I end up with?
I asked this question in sincerity as I was approached by the owner of the lab to breed. I am not irrresponsible as some have suggested or i wouldnt have bothered with the research...Thanks to those people who were genuine with their answers and to the others who were so opinionated save it for some rubbish chat room and keep this site as a forum of interest and education.

do you know of anyone who is breeding golden retrievers in michigan?

i live in mt. morris
so preferrably nothing that that like 90 miles away.
i looked online, but they are thousands of dollars!!
i have about 400..so anything within that range?

Log on to www.petfinder.com. Type in your zip code and select "Golden Retriever" from the drop-down. There is a Golden Retriever rescue in Michigan that takes in pure needs that are unwanted. It will be hard to find a pure bred from a breeder for under $800. There are so many dogs in rescues looking for their forever homes.

How do I tell my neighbors they’re not feeding their dog enough?

By: admin
Published: February 20th, 2010

We're constantly dog-sitting my neighbor's beautiful Golden Retriever, who get's fed two mug-fulls of special dental dog food once a day. First of all, the food isn't helping her teeth at all and is low in nutrients, and second, she's a big dog and isn't being fed nearly enough! How do I nicely tell my neighbors that they need to change her eating habits?
The thing is she's not really not eating enough, but on walks she tries to eat poop, so I'm guessing she might just not be getting enough nutrients.

Well, some dogs don't need to eat a lot of food. And some big dogs will overeat and its important to not give them too much.
She may not be fed enough, but there is some important information left out that can tell if she is or not.
Are her hip bones prominent? Can you see her ribs?
You should not see protruding hip bones, and the ribs should not be seen, but you should be able to feel them under a thin layer of fat.
Here is a chart: http://users.tpg.com.au/choclab/img/dog_weight_chart.jpg

And most dogs will try to eat shit if they come across it. It has nothing to do with how well they are fed, its just something they do. :\
